This kind of celestial arrangement is usually something I associate with the power of the West. Apparently it is possible to see it in the east as well at the right times of the year. (You won't catch me up at the time of day necessary to see this, unless I've for some reason stayed up that late.)

Apparently I got the wireless mouse I am using right now. Wow, was it that long ago?

7/3/06
No posts. On 7/5/06 I was applying for jobs in Ontario.

7/3/05
No posts. On 7/1/05 I posted a link to a cool APOD picture and talked about my net worth. (That post is filtered to a small subset; sorry if you can't see it.) After the big spend-fest that was moving to Canada and back in 2006 and having no job for eight months that year, it's taken me three years to recover to the same point. Almost exactly three years, in fact; last month I again crossed the same threshold mentioned in that post.

7/3/04
Burbling about American and Canadian citizenship tests.

7/3/03
No posts. On 7/2/03 a boring sooper seekrit message to [info]tyrsalvia about some CDs I left at her house.

7/2/02
No posts. I started this journal in April 2002 but the posting is pretty spotty until December 2002. There aren't any posts at all July-September.

"This Web site is devoted to lexpionage, the sleuthing of new words and phrases. These aren't 'stunt words' or 'sniglets,' but new terms that have appeared multiple times in newspapers, magazines, books, Web sites, and other recorded sources."

Neat!

Print-on-demand for magazines, a niche apparently not filled by things like Lulu. Interesting idea.

me: [fondling empty Chambord bottle] It's so cute and spherical! I need a cork for it.

[info]enotsola: And then you can fill it with rainbow sand and glitter.

me: Ummm... why?

him: Because those are pretty!

me: That's not exactly the effect I'm going for.

him: You just gotta be careful not to move them. They get all outta whack.

me: Well... I should just fill it with whack then!

him: You'd think that, but that never seems to work.

me: No?

him: No... For some reason, when you get a lot of whack in a concentrated area, it seems that two thirds of it always turns into wiggity.

If a mere 5 days = skip=200 then I think I've overbooked myself. I just can't keep up on 623 (!) friends and comms between three journals (although some of that is LJ/IJ duplication I skip). Granted, a good deal of recent traffic on my flist has had to do with George Carlin, but still. Argh.

So many people's lives seem to be getting so massively upset around me right now. Valued relationships ending, strife occurring, jobs lost, property wrecked. I only speak of the narrow window I have through my two LJ lists and IJ list, but still. I hope with all my heart that you will find respite from your sorrows very soon, grace and comfort for your hurts.

I'm just sorry [info]enotsola and I can't go get a non-gendered license.
I get confused by things like this:

"By definition marriage is the union of a man and a woman," said Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage (left).

Er, by what definition? is my first thought at a statement like that. (See, critical thinking professor from college? You did teach me something. Define your terms or you can't have meaningful discourse!)

"Marriage" means a "merging together" or "uniting", with the implication that we hope it's harmonious and beneficial. Besides people, one can speak of marrying words and music, or flavours in a culinary creation, or pools of economic resources. It's a noun formed from the verb marier, which descends from maritus, that is, conjugal, which itself means "yoking together" (cf. "religion", and let your imagination run rampant, lol).

The joining of two things. (Potentially even more than that, actually; it's not specified as far as I'm concerned.)

That's all.

I really agree with [info]baxil here:

"Something big is indeed being lost here, and we will be better off without it."

When convention protects love, friendship, community, happiness, guard it with your life. When convention stands in the way of these things, dance in the rubble.

Hmm. I got to skip=400 and still hadn't hit posts I recognized since last reading.

Maybe I ought to read LJ more often than every two weeks, eh?

(Sorry, guys. I try, but you kind of lost me to Harry Potter fandom. Maaannny CPU cycles so devoted.)

from a comment I made in a locked post:

I've made the mistake of trying to achieve some kind of nebulous spiritual thing by Buying Shit before. I spend a lot of my life turning my energy (time) into money, so hey, maybe I can work the conversion back the other way: the more of _____ I buy, the more thought I am directing towards it.

Unfortunately that doesn't exactly work, especially when we are talking about initially opening up a current, whether that's to a line of practice or to a specific being. You have to spend the time directly first. You cannot lead off with material gifts. Think how you would feel if someone just randomly approached you and gave you something, even if they had done research to find out what you liked. You'd probably wonder what their motive was, wouldn't you? It would seem a little creepy. You would not be all that inclined to just say hey, sure, we're buds now. After you've spent some time and exchanged some thought and energy, then you can start buying gifts if you like, and it will seem much more sincere.

I've tripped over this multiple times in the past *mumble* years and I think it's only sunk in very recently. I've tried buying "stuff" for various spirit contacts, sometimes as gifts, sometimes as anchors. Doesn't work. Has that same hollow feeling. Gotta sit and have a bunch of rap sessions first, pal. Or in the case of a body of practice, work with its techniques.

It's a funny cycle -- you should start out without too much stuff. Then you can start accumulating stuff as useful tools. Then eventually you start dropping a lot of the stuff again, maybe even all of it, because hey, you and your spirit buddy (/god/tradition/whatever) have spent all this time together now, you no longer need the accoutrements, the venue; you have each other.

geeky weekend, but mit crap
This weekend has had a high proportion of fail. Read more... )

But there was one small highlight, and that was that we did achieve our primary objective in going to Super-Con in the first place: Getting to see Joel, Trace, Frank, and Josh (J. Elvis) and also Wil Wheaton. Tipping slightly in the "fail" side of things was that the MST dudes seemed really wiped, and not terribly enthusiastic about being there, but I suppose there are few things that can compare to Joel Hodgson saying "Hi, I'm Joel" and shaking yours and your husband's hands. ^_^ Read more... )

"tests for husbands and wives"
http://flickr.com/photos/tiabla/2491839696/in/set-72157605047200616/

LOLwut?

Seriously, look at each page at a larger size and read them. Some of the things (both "merits" and "demerits") are reasonable, but a lot of them are really ridiculous. And some confuse me just by their presence. From our chat window:

From "Husband's":

"fails to change socks often enough" wtf?
"dislikes to dress or shave on sunday" hey, if you want to go to church naked, it's fine with me
"does not use tobacco" wtf? this was a time when smoking was very much accepted
"writes on tablecloth with pencil" wtf???
"Ardent lover -- sees that wife has orgasm in marital congress" LOL that's worth 20 points!
"not a sissy" lol
"tries to keep wife equipped with modern labor saving devices" -- including ones that would contribute to "ardent lover"?
"gives wife real movie kisses not dutiful peck on the cheek" weird, since movie kisses in this time period are quite obviously fake

From "Wife's":
"slow in coming to bed -- delays till husband is almost asleep" lol, rite. because my duty is to give you sex, remember?
"wears red nail polish" wtf?
"puts her cold feet on husband to warm them" lol
"religious -- sends children to church or sunday school and goes herself" but also "lets husband sleep late on sundays". I guess you don't have to be religious
"uses slang or profanity" well fuck, I guess i suxx0r
"squeezes toothpaste at the top" wtf?
"tells risque or vulgar stories" so this one time at band camp...
"wears pajamas while cooking"??
"laughs at husbands jokes and his clowning" even if he's completely unfunny.
"has a pleasant disposition in the morning -- not crabby" yeah, that's going to happen
"reacts with pleasure and delight to marital congress" lol i just love the way that's phrased
"has spunk" well i suppose I will if I react with pleasure to marital congress
"wears pajamas instead of nightgown" wha?
"is snobbish or too much concerned with keeping up with the joneses" but on the last page, there was "encourages family to attain highly" or something
"often comments on husband's strength and masculinity" BAAAHAHAHAHA right. well, you have testicles and face fur. that's masculine enough for me
"has minor children to care for. 5 points per child" wtf just think about this for a second. "I am more pleased with my wife if she has children"?? are you not aware of where they would come from, pal?
"walks around house in stocking feet" see, i told you that was weird [I usually wear shoes in the house, whereas [info]enotsola's habit has always been for socks only]

Doubletree already taking PantheaCon reservations
According to the Ancient Ways newsletter I got yesterday, the con code would have been available beginning on the 1st. At any rate they were definitely aware of it when I booked just now. May is awfully early; probably at that rate the hotel really will be booked by Sept/Oct instead of that being partly a SNAFU like I heard it was this year/last year. So if you know you'll be going, I suggest you book ASAP.
